Pep Guardiola has expressed uncertainty regarding the severity of an injury sustained by Manchester City’s crucial midfielder, Rodri, during Sunday’s match against Arsenal. The Spanish player appeared to suffer a knee injury following a collision with Arsenal’s Thomas Partey during a corner kick. Rodri had to be substituted, and within a minute of his departure, Arsenal equalized.

When questioned about the extent of the injury, Guardiola admitted, “I don’t know yet. I didn’t ask the doctors. He’s strong, but he felt something, which is why he left the pitch. Otherwise, he would’ve stayed.”

Rodri’s absence would undoubtedly be a significant blow to Manchester City, with Guardiola hailing him as “the best holding midfielder in the world.” Sunday’s game marked Rodri’s first start of the season and only his second appearance, following his recovery from a hamstring injury.

The Spaniard’s impact on City’s performance is undeniable, with statistics highlighting his importance. Since joining City in 2019, the team has lost 24% of matches without him, compared to just 11% when he plays. Moreover, Rodri is currently on an unbeaten run of 52 consecutive Premier League matches, with City’s last league defeat involving him dating back to February 2023 against Tottenham Hotspur.

Last season, Manchester City suffered three Premier League defeats, all of which came in games Rodri was unavailable for. With his recent Ballon d’Or nomination and incredible run of form, any extended absence could prove pivotal for City’s ambitions this season.
